Do you find yourself agreeing with any of the following statements?
I wish I didn’t look this way.
I often look at pictures of women’s bodies in the media, and it makes me feel bad about my own body.
I find myself constantly researching and thinking of ways to try to look different to how I do now.
If you found yourself answering YES to any of the above, then it is time to actively work on your self-esteem and change some unhealthy online viewing habits.
I once interviewed two girls who told me that together they could spend up to six hours searching the word ‘skinny’ on Tumblr. It was only when they said that out loud that they realized that it wasn’t doing them any good.
Start focusing on the bits of yourself that you do like, the bits that make you feel happy, strong and in control. People talk about eyes being beautiful because they are: go look at yours. They are your two portals to your inner galaxies: full of mermaid-tail blues, greys and greens, all the autumnal magic of brown, hazel and amber. Your eyes are breathtakingly beautiful.
The relentless and futile pursuit of perfection is all around us, and we have to find some way to cope with it, to see our bodies as not just good enough, but COOL AS F*CK! YOUR BODY IS VALUABLE AND REMARKABLE. The minute you accept that no one fits into the ‘cookie cutter’ of perfect, is the minute you will realize that all bodies are beautiful, including yours.
